Christmas Time in Malta 2020

01 Dec 2020 Latest News Written by: Farrugia, Samantha

It’s that magical time of year again...creeping in like the waft of warm mulled wine spices and freshly baked mince pies through an open window.. or in Malta… it may just be a heartwarming pan of Brodu (traditional Maltese soup) to thaw the bones, let's face it... inside Maltese homes, where homes are built for keeping heat out, get awfully chilly, always makes me wonder if summer was just a figment of my imagination…

We begin to feel that festive cheer feeling….without any slight possibility of a real snowflake in sight or mind in Malta,  however it doesn't hinder the feelings that even the grinchiest of grinches can ignore. Malta becomes alight with vibrant colours of Christmas lights to enthrall those from 0 to 99 and the main street crack out the speakers with festive tunes..there's no escaping it..no matter how fast you can run shop to shop.

Christmas has this way of sneaking up here, like a meerkat peeking up from its den, I believe it's due to the fact summer is a longggg hot affair that lingers on way past when the split of seasons should really, truly suspend. So one day... in October it hits like a really unexpected face plant (that you hope and pray that no one has noticed) whilst eating an over sliced piece of pizza after a night out. No... I've never done that before, honest.

Whilst sitting on the beach casually scrolling on your phone, whislt sipping Pina Colada you notice that one friend on social media has put up a post, with that ol’ big red nose, white beard fella with the splashy text - “Ho Ho Ho only 6 weeks till Christmas!!” **GULP**

Panic stations!….scrolling shopping online sites has commenced, right there, on the beach (double checking the calendar counting the weeks, not quite believing…)

**takes another GULP of Pina Colada**

This year is a new experience, but we still we have some goings-on to invigorate the senses. Let's see what’s on the must-do list this year!

1.The Magical Illuminated Trail - Drive-Thru Edition at Gianpula Fields

4th December 2020 - 10th January 2021

Ohhh yes… Let the festivities begin next weekend! With a promise of mesmerising sights for all ages. From the safety of you car. “Get ready for an all-new, one-of-a-kind Magical experience, all from the safety of your own car!” So grab your ‘mini you’s’ bundle them snuggly into their car seats and be ready for a new experience to be had in Malta. (oh... and take a second to appreciate that no amount of running around after you child, screaming ‘noooo touching’ is required). You must pre-buy tickets in advance via the website, all proceeds go to The Malta Community Chest Fund.

2. Take a Majestic Walk Around Mdina

Mdina dates back to the Medieval times and quickly upon arrival will take you back like you’ve just stepped back in time (with a tiny bit of imagination). Picture a scene from the famous Christmas Carol Story by Charles Dickens only a Mediterranean version, with streets bustling with horses and carts and envisage Ebenezer Scrooge counting his pennies by candlelight in one of the majestically eeire surrounding buildings. Discover tiny doors and jail-like street level windows whilst conjuring up ideas that it holds some dark, sordid mystery once passed...or did it?

3.Visit Valletta

Valletta is a must at Christmas with an array of festive lights, cosy cafes, museums and quite simply a good old fashioned walk around the city, let's just admit...there’s not many cities in Europe you can walk around without being weighed down by 20 layers of clothes…

4. The Valletta Waterfront Christmas Wonderland

The Valletta Waterfront Wonderland is between 28 November 2020 - 6 January 2021 which promotes a Christmas tree over 35 feet tall, a giant Nutcracker over 20 feet tall and a postbox directly delivering to the North Pole...do you dare to find out if you're on Santa’s good list this year? Boasting many eateries or just to simply relax with a loved one or discover a new favorite Christmas flavour coffee at Starbucks

5.Christmas Meets Science - Esplora Interactive Science Museum

Esplora are offering a month long free entrance for children aged 0-15 from 1st December 2020 to 6th January 2021. I simply love this place.. They will be hosting dazzling shows with fantastic activities themed around the festive season, whilst also taking into account the restrictions. A place where Christmas magic and science collide!

Have a great festive season! Stay safe all.
